“Being here at this residency, I am learning a lot, not just techniques but also I am reading a lot more, writing, researching… thinking of my future as a professional artist.”
Sheena Rose studied Fine Arts at the Barbados Community College St. Michael. Currently she is pursuing her MA in Studio Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Rose explores everyday experiences through animation, drawings, performance, installation, and painting. Her work mainly consists of hand drawn animation joined with photographs, mixed media and comic strips. Rose's animations have a surreal quality and often play with the idea of stereotypes of her home country. She has participated in artist residencies in Suriname, Trinidad, the United States and South Africa and her work has been shown in various exhibitions worldwide, including the 11th
Havana Biennial and Caribbean: Crossroads of the World
(New York, 2012). Rose is also the founder of Projects and Space, a virtual community supporting experimental art projects in new public spaces.
During her residency Rose created several new works. Her residency culminated in two exhibitions: FREE!
with RaQuel van Haver at Centre for Visual Arts Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost) and Remy & Friends
during the OPEN ART ROUTE 2013. For more pictures and some incredible blog posts click here
